Tertiary Level Programmes

From its very inception the Mahatma Gandhi Institute has been entrusted with the development of the Oriental Languages and the Performing Arts. The very first Ongoing lecturedegree of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, awarded by the University of Mauritius, was a Bachelor of Arts in Hindustani Music (Vocal/Sitar) run between 1978 and 1981. In 1990, under the aegis of the University of Mauritius, the Joint Honours degrees in languages started. The joint degrees aimed at developing academic competence in the Oriental Languages per se as well as a versatile approach to languages in the students' choice encouraging interaction between languages and cultures of Mauritius. The first cohort who graduated in 1993 comprised students who had opted for Hindi and French/Hindi and English. Following further negotiations with the University of Mauritius, the Mahatma Gandhi Institute is now running eleven Degree Courses. In devising these programmes, there has been conscious effort to ensure the overall enrichment of students, helping them to develop the necessary competence to live and work  in a culturally diverse society. The degree programmes of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute  include electives in Mauritian Studies, Performing Arts, Indian Philosophy and Fine Arts.
