The Department is engaged in the promotion and propagation of Mauritian LIterature and Creative Writing particularly in Hindi. The main activities of the Department include the publishing of two Hindi magazines 'Vasant' and 'Rimjhim'. These publications provide the forum to young writers to contribute. Readers are encouraged to subscribe to the magazines through literary competitions.
Members of the Department contribute regularly to the cause of Hindi by bringing out their own publications.
The quarterly journal 'Vasant' which is famous all over the Hindi World as a good Literary magazine is now also culture-oriented and covers a wide range of cultural and literary activities in Hindi. From time to time it also includes translation of poems from English, French, Urdu, Marathi, Tamil and Telegu in Hindi. Research papers in different topics are also published in "Vasant".
From time to time, in a new column “From Archives”, life and works of eminent personalities are published. 'Vasant' received the Best Magazine of Hindi 1998/99 Award from the Akhil Bharatiya Patrakar Parishad (All India Journalist Association). The Best Editor Award has also been attributed to the Editor of 'Vasant', Dr. B. Jugasing.
This bi-monthly magazine is published for children. The magazine has been updated to meet the requirements of young readers of Hindi of upper primary and lower secondary classes. Winners of Quiz Competitions are rewarded in an annual function. Children are encouraged to write Hindi in order to test their Hindi knowledge in a question paper which is included in each issue..
